Guesthouse that $h*t

During the less than pleasant feels sorts of times, That’s one of the things I try to remind myself of during the more difficult times. It’s much easier than trying to run from unpleasant emotions.

You may already know what I’m referring to by guesthouse, but for those who haven’t heard this classic by Rumi - I feel privileged to introduce you.

“This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.”

I once had a mediation teacher, and now friend, Bridget Regan who said many things that stuck with me during her guided meditations. One of them being, to “chase wholeness, rather than happiness” - she had heard it from someone else, but that’s besides the point. More on Bridget another time.

Back to the tough stuff. The other takeaway I get from the guesthouse is just to stay open generally. I try not to say that “I’m having a bad day” anymore, instead I’ll concede to difficult moments, but I like to leave the day open to turning around.

Whatever you’re having, I hope it’s a good one.
