No More Fucked Up Fitness
Background + Guiding Principles
Beach season is upon us, which means that that our culture's hyper-fixation on appearance has once again been kicked into high gear.
I doubt I'm surprising anyone by saying that the majority of the fitness industry is fucked up, and much of the dogmatic popular advice given from fitness influencers and even “experts” (read: charlatans) is incorrect and often damaging.
So, I think this is an opportune time for me to introduce a projects I've been planning for sometime now, No More Fucked Up Fitness.
My intention for No More Fucked Up Fitness and future NMFUF content is to debunk common misconceptions found in the fitness insustry, and help others approach the fitness/health space in a way that enhances their lives rather than take away from it.
Roddy, why would anyone ask you for advice on fitness/training/nutrition etc.?

I think most people approach me with fitness related questions because I look like I know what I'm doing…and for the most part, I do.
Okay, how about why SHOULD someone want your advice on fitness/physique/nutrition etc.?
Because I haven't always been “fit”, quite the opposite. I have been all over the spectrum of physical fitness and overall health, and I can help others avoid some of the more damaging mistakes I've made and develop routines and behaviors that bring the best results.

My 13th birthday party
Additionally, I have worked with a few true experts in various realms of the health & fitness industries including:
Layne Norton PhD and natural pro bodybyilder/strongman
JCDeen Coach, author and contributing writer to the like of Men's Health
John Dorsey aka Goob_U2 among the most popular entrepreneurs and influencers in the fitness/physique industry. Goob coaches countless IFBB pros to winning results and helps even more fitness enthusiasts reach their most impressive results (without fucking up their heads)
Leslie Bonci MPH, RD, CSSD, LDN is the nutrition consultant for the Kansas City Chiefs , Carnegie Mellon University athletics and the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. She was the sports dietitian for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Pirates, Pittsburgh Penguins, Toronto Blue Jays ,the Washington Nationals and the WNBA

Okay, so you've worked with experts - but what makes YOU (Roddy) and your content valuable?
Answer: Because I've been all over the spectrum of health and fitness and have dealt with a number of issues (below) that allow a broader perspective of health and what it takes to not just look good, but feel good.
Listed below: a few of the more sitnificant personal issues/ life's circumstances that I've had to navigate while maintaining an active lifestyle.
OCD
MDD
Disordered Eating
Substance Abuse
Autoimmune Diseases (Ankylosing Spondylitis, Ulcerative Colitis)
Broken bones and musculoskeletal injuries
![]() Wasting away in 2014 ![]() Doing better in 2024 | The top picture was taken during one of the more difficult periods of my life. I had finally received a diagnosis of Ankylosing Spondylitis after 8+ months of over 150 appointments with doctors and specialists. |
I plan to elaborate on all of the above in coming weeks, but I wanted to briefly mention them here, because we all have to deal with the hand we're dealt and will be hit by life's inevitable blows from time to time.
It was around the same time that this photo was taken that one of my Zen teacher's Ezra Bayda told me a quote that was told to him from his own teacher:
These are not obstacles to the path.
They are part of the path.
I want to help others approach fitness in a way that enhances their lives, no matter the constraints or circumstances. To make positive changes out of an appreciation and place of care.
And with that, here are the guiding principles to the No More Fucked Up Fitness (NMFUF) approach.

What's Next for NMFUF?
The next content piece 5I've planned to write is a more detailed piece about detrimental impact restrictive eating and excessive exercise titled, “The Commonalities between Crash/Contest Dieting and Concentration Camps”
This will include a deeper dive into research like the Minnesota Semi-Starvation Study, the surprising origin story of the FDA’s 2000 kcal guideline, set-point theory and more.
Do you offer training/coaching or can you recommend someone who does?
Sometimes. However; fitness coaching has never been my primary “money-maker” so I only work with individuals that are a great fit.
Otherwise, Yes. I know plenty of people who can help you with your fitness goals.
If you’re interested, email me Roddy[at]roddygibbs.co with a little bit more of what you're looking for (including if you don't know what you're looking for) and I'm happy to discuss options.
Thanks for reading, and if you've enjoyed this newsletter - please do me a HUGE favor and share it with someone new.
Love and gratitude,
Roddy.
